i have a carter playlist on my ipod made up of his favorite songs. i started paying attention to songs he asked me to play again after we listen to them, and this is the current list. some of these songs he even asks for out of the blue.
i’ve included links to the songs in case anyone wants to hear them…i’ve only seen a couple of the videos all the way through, so i don’t necessarily endorse or support the images, opinions, quality, or cheesiness of any of them. how’s that for a disclaimer?
keep the car running - arcade fire - maybe his current favorite, if he says “kick the car running” it means he wants to hear this song
no cars go - arcade fire - a sample of the lyrics: “i know a place where no planes go….i know a place where no ships go…HEY! (carter loves yelling hey) no cars go”. carter likes to look around the room and apply these lyrics to anything he sees: “HEY! no blue trucks go. HEY! no cream goes.”
chocolate - snow patrol - he loves when the drums kick in at the beginning. “i heard the drums daddy.”
chasing cars - snow patrol - i’m pretty sure it’s not a coincidence that this is the 3rd song on this list about cars.
clocks - coldplay - this was one of the first songs he noticed. he used to sit on the floor and rock forward and back with it.
swallowed in the sea - coldplay - this is the newest addition to his playlist. the kid knows a good hook.
timebomb- beck - now we enter the dance portion of the list. as noted earlier, carter asks for this as either “timebomb” or “fumble”, and he loves to spin to it and listen to it 10 times in a row.
gone daddy gone - gnarls barkley - same as timebomb, he likes to boogie to this one.
king of pain - the police - old school carter. those opening lines really caught his attention. he asks for “there’s a little black spot on the sun today.”
introduction/the time has come - hillsong united - (this is a crummy live recording, but you get the idea) he does the straight-legged rock back and forth to this one.
take it all - hillsong united - these hillsong tracks were early favorites as well.
awesome god - rich mullins - he LOVES this triumvirate of rich mullins songs, he especially wants us to sing them to him before going to bed, and he doesn’t ever want to hear just one. he wants to hear all three, in this order.
sometimes by step - rich mullins - he calls this one step by step.
creed - rich mullins - i just jokingly started singing this one, thinking he wouldn’t really notice, and now he knows it really well. i sing all the verses, and he actually prompts me on them before i get to them. on the second verse he says “buried. buried.” he especially loves the bridge, and before i get to it he starts asking “how bout the church? how bout the church?”
